ABOUT THE GUY

While becoming a writer, I worked as a factory hand, journalist, bartender, office temp, Peace Corps volunteer, and elementary school teacher.  Somehow along the way, I maintained my interest in everything.

As a frequent contributor to Smithsonian, I wrote about everything from eels to the history of Coney Island, from Ferraris to Jack London, from men’s hats to the vagaries of pi (π).  I have also written for The Los Angeles TimesThe Wall Street JournalThe Boston GlobeAmerican HeritageNautilus, Yankee, Sky and Telescope, and The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2003.

Since 2017, I have been the one-man editor/writer/designer of The Attic. This weekly online magazine features short articles about American dreamers, wonders, wits, rebels, faces, and places, The Attic promotes a kinder, cooler America. Because I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the anger.
